Mataiyasi Tuwai’s dream to become professional hairdresser will come true after he successfully completes a Diploma in Hairdressing at Fiji National University Nadi Campus.

The 38-year-old Nahigatoka villager from Nadroga secured a scholarship of more than $5000 after being named the winner of the Cutting Edge Community Project, an event organised by the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort Bebe Spa.

“Ever since growing up in the village I always dreamt of becoming a professional hairdresser, but I had never shared this anyone because I know that no one would support me,” Mr Tuwai said.

“I used to work in few resorts in Sigatoka to earn money so that I could pay my fees at schools in Fiji that offered hairdressing and make-up courses.

“God has heard my prayer through this scholarship. I will be able to enhance my skills and become a professional qualified hairdresser.”

The project was facilitated by EmpowHAIR Ministry Owner, Dani Haddad, who is a professional hairdresser from Sydney, Australia.

Initially, 30 participants were chosen for the courses from villages in Sigatoka solely focused on the unemployed. They went through series of training with hairdressing kits from Australia, but then the numbers of participants were shortlisted to 12.

Mr Tuwai said upon the completion of his course he would be employed by the resort as a professional hairdresser.

Resort general manager Peter Hopgood the idea to start the project came about when learned that the cost to become a hairdresser in Fiji was more than $5000.

“To the contestants we thank you for your participation. We trust that you have learnt a lot over the past six months and that you all continue with your dream to become a hairdresser,” he said.

“I congratulate the team from Bebe Spa for undertaking this wonderful community project. The Cutting Edge Project is what we are all about at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, giving back to our community.”
