The Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Alexander O’Conor thanked about 200 people who turned up to mark World Blood Donor Day in Nabouwalu, Bua yesterday.

He encouraged everyone present to be advocates of blood donation and help spread the message on the importance of blood donation.

Mr O’Conor said Fiji hoped to reach 100 per cent voluntary non remunerated blood donation by 2019.

“Our utmost appreciation and compliments to you for your tremendous partnership and dedication that has enabled us to build a network of 17,000 blood donors,” Mr O’Conor said.

“Indeed this event is significant to recognise and appreciate the work of blood donors and their selfless contribution to saving lives through donating blood.

“Blood transfusions help save millions of lives every year. That is why giving blood is often described as giving the ‘gift of life’.

“Regular voluntary blood donors are the foundation and the strength of our blood donation services.”

Mr O’Conor said this year’s World Blood Donor Day theme was, “Be there for someone else. Give blood. Share life”.

“This theme emphasises that blood donation is an act of kindness and generosity that helps save life.

“It is important to note that blood donations go a long way in helping the health professionals treat patients,” he said.

“It helps save lives of those who are suffering from life-threatening diseases like cancer, bleeding disorders, chronic anemia associated with cancer, sickle cell anemia and other hereditary blood abnormalities.”
