The Tongan rugby team are geared up for their clash against the Fiji Airways Flying Fijians at Churchill Park, Lautoka, this Saturday.

The Siale Piutau- captained side walloped Manu Samoa 28-18 during the Pacific Nations Cup clash at the ANZ Stadium, Suva, yesterday.

Speaking to SUNsports, Piutau said apart from the penalties they did really well.

“There is a lot that we can improve on,” he said.

“This was an improvement from the Georgia game and there is a lot of learning for us as we take on the game against Fiji.”

Tongan coach Toutai Kefu said they were confident in the set pieces and that was one of the areas they wanted to improve on.

“Our set piece is definitely our strength, but we will now assess our players as some are injured.”

What happened: It was all Tonga in the first half as they scored a try to winger Viliame Lolohea, early in the game which was converted by Sonatane Takulua.

Ah See Tuala put Samoa on the board with a penalty kick. The momentum saw the Tongan backline punching holes in the Samoan defence to score their second try to Cooper Vuna with Takulua adding the extras for a 14-3 lead.

Samoa replied with another Tuala penalty to narrow the deficit 14-6.

Tonga took advantage of the penalties, which allowed Takulua to kick over a penalty for a 17-6 lead.

Halftime: Tonga 17-6

Tonga again was on fire in the second half. With two penalty kicks from Takulua and a try from Penikolo Latu saw them.

Trailing by 28-6, Samoa fought back and managed to score two tries to replacement winger Ed Fidow and halfback Melani Matavao with Tuala converting one of the tries.
