It was a Test dream debut for 20-year-old, Fiji Airways Flying Fijians hooker Ratuvere Vugakoto as they walloped Georgia 37-15 at the ANZ Stadium, Suva yesterday.

Hailing from Daviqele in Nabukelevu, Kadavu, Vugakoto played like a Test veteran and was always in the thick of things.

The Swire Shipping Fijian Warrior was the only local- based player in the starting line-up but competed against professional players in every aspect of the game.

His ability to know and understand the team’s codes at various parts of the field and his calls during scrums has impressed the coaching staff.

“Firstly I thank God for his guidance and provisions, I didn’t expect to perform at this level but God gave me the opportunity and I was able to complete the task,” Vugakoto told SUNsports.

“I also acknowledge the senior players for always encouraging me and motivating me all along. My aim during the match was to be consistent.

“Throughout the week, we were reminded about the strong forward pack Georgia will bring but we came prepared. They were strong in the scrums but I have learnt a lot from this match.”

Flying Fijians head coach John McKee was happy with Vugakoto’s performance.

“It’s so pleasing for me to see young players like Vugakoto coming in. It’s his first time with the Flying Fijians. I was watching him for a while from the academy, under-20 and right to the Fiji Warriors.,” he said.

McKee said for Vugakoto to be given the opportunity to play against such a great forward pack is an excellent start for him. The Nadroga hooker also earned praises from skipper Akapusi Qera.

“I’m proud of how Vugakoto played, how he adjusted himself to the game just shows the level of performance our local players are at. Nothing is impossible if they put everything together, they can achieve it,” he added.
