Call to raise blood donations, empowerment

Peceli Tubuwaiwai of Bhawani Dayal Arya College walked away as the winner of the National Blood Donor oratory contest during the awards night last Saturday in Labasa.

The Namara, Tailevu, lad said he wasn’t expecting to win.

“I didn’t come to win, but to empower youths to donate blood so they could save someone’s life. Sometimes people don’t know the importance of donating blood until someone close to them needs blood,” Peceli said.

“Sometimes youths are told that they are good for nothing. Let me tell you something donate blood so that next time they tell you you’re good for nothing let them know that you have donated blood and saved three people. I just want to empower youths out there who are healthy to donate blood and save lives.”

The Year 13 student was thankful for the support of his teachers, parents and friends.

“I have taken part in oratory contests and debates, but this is the first time I have won at national level. I want to thank my teachers, parents and friends who have been supportive of me since day one,” Peceli said.

“I dedicate this win to all the donors out there who have been donating blood to save the lives of others. I salute them for their tireless dedication and commitment and I encourage others to start donating blood.”
