Former Fijian rugby 7s rep Isake Katonibau, 35, was told in the Suva Magistrates Court that he was given opportunities to reform but he continued to front the court on allegations.

He appeared in court yesterday charged with one count of serious assault and was represented by defence lawyer Joseph Daurewa.

Magistrate Waleen George refused bail for Katonibau’s and told Mr Daurewa to file a formal application to be determined in Magistrates Court Three.

Magistrate George said it was not the first time that Katonibau had offended, adding that he had previously appeared for damaging property charges and for assaulting an Energy Fiji Limited officer.

She said allegedly assaulting a Police officer was a serious offence and mentioned that the accused had been sentenced on one of his previous files.

It is alleged that on June 17, 2018 at about 4am the accused was involved in a brawl along Carnavon Street when he allegedly  punched Special Constable 2923 Peni Verekauta, 36, who was trying to stop the fight.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Luke Qerawaqa told the court that full phase disclosures had been served to the accused.

Mr Daurewa requested Magistrate George to adjourn the case to today for the accused’s bail application to be heard in court.

However, Magistrate George said she would give him seven days instead.

The accused agreed with Magistrate George that he had already been warned in court on previous occasions.

Katonibau was further remanded in custody and his case adjourned to June 25, 2018 for mention.

Mr Daurewa is only representing Katonibau for first call and his bail application.
