The Ministry of Waterways has noted an increased number of requests across the Northern Division on the need for maintenance work on drainage systems.

During a briefing at the Labasa Drainage Board yesterday Minister Mahendra Reddy was told by his staff members that requests over phone calls and emails showed that people were aware of their ministry’s agenda.

“The seven areas where maintenances of drainage system and creek are taking place include Vunivau, Korokadi, Luvuluvu, Tausa, Nasarawaqa, Droca and Dreketi,” Mr Reddy said.

“Last week upon public request and followed by assessment, our team began work at flood prone areas like Batinikama and Waiqele.

“We have received complaints from people saying that there are some places where no one has ever thought of repairing existing drains.

“When members of my team visits such places they found out one common practice and that is people tend to plant dalo on silted drains.

“So when there is heavy rain, there is no direct flow of water and debris and rubbish turn to cause blocked drains and sometimes water overflows to nearby farms.”

When asked as to how much fund has been used since the ministry began work in the Northern Division in January, Mr Reddy said he could not comment because work was ongoing and requests had increased.

The ministry will have to analyse and carry out work on a need basis.

“Works are carried out by five different contractors and this is why I am here to see how much work has been done and to hear from the people during the talanoa sessions how effectively we can help them,” he said.

“We want to help people as much as we can.”

During his two-day tour Mr Reddy will visit places like Lagalaga, Nubu, Kilikoso, Raranikawai, Qelemumu, Taganikula and Vunivutu.
