Ba Town came alive as students from various schools in the Western Division took to the streets chanting ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ while diplaying their placards.

The message was clear.

The Government has the task to build a Fiji where the next generation can enjoy a better life than the ones who went before it.

Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Bala said: “That means tackling the environment problems, so they are not a burden for our children and grandchildren.”

He made those comments during the World Environment Day event for the Western Division at the Ba Market ground yesterday.

“In the West, as in the rest of Fiji, we are blessed with an abundance and variety of landscapes and habitats,” Mr Bala said.

“These natural assets are of immense value. It is what defines us to the rest of the world.

“Tourists are drawn to our shores to enjoy these beautiful landscapes, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs in tourism.

“Industries, which directly draw on our environment – from natural waters to mining to agriculture and forestry to aquaculture and fishing – support jobs and contribute to our economy.

“So today I ask you? How can we make changes in our everyday lives to overcome threats like plastic pollution?

“The answer is very simple. It has to begin with individual action and awareness of plastic and other forms of pollutions.

“Action shows pride in who you are. Pride in where you come from.”
