Every year Mereani Tikoitoga will have something to look forward to.

All the way from Cicia Island in Lau, Ms Tikoitoga said she found the National Women’s Expo as an opportunity to display her talents through her handiwork.

She said, despite the challenges and the unfavorable weather conditions this year, she was still able to collect few things to be showcased.

“The recent cyclone did affect our voivoi (pandanus leaves) but we managed to recover in a month,” she said.

Ms Tikoitoga said she had to trek three hours to collect her pandanus leaves to weave her mats. It was her source of income.

“We leave the village early in the morning so we could be back before dark,” she said.

“That was our main challenge on the Island.”

She has been participating at the Expo for the last three years.

“I have learnt so much in the last three years that I’ve been part of the Expo and this year I am looking forward to learning more,” Ms Tikoitoga said.

“I should at least return to the Island knowing. how to weave a fan and make masi, because this is something we don’t do in Cicia.”

Ms Tikoitoga is expecting to get $1,250 from her handiwork at the end of the Expo.

Meanwhile, she attended the two-day Women Capacity Building workshop at the Grand Pacific Hotel that ended yesterday.

“I have learnt a lot from the workshop as well, especially on how to take good care of our children by supporting them with their education,” Ms Tikoitoga said.

She thanked the Ministry of Women for the opportunity given to her.

Two women from Cicia Island will be taking part in the Expo.
