Paramount chief and Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa has praised the staging of the annual National Women’s Expo, saying it is encouraging to see the creativity and innovation of participants.

The Marama Bale na Roko Tui Dreketi, who is head of Rewa Province and the Burebasaga confederacy, made the comment after a visit to the FMF Gymnasium, the event venue.

“I commend their efforts and fully acknowledge the potential women have to add to the success story of Fiji as a creative nation,” she said.

“I hope that with the National Budget announcement next week, allocation will be made to allow more women to participate in this type of economic activity in years to come.

“This activity not only allows women to showcase their skills and earn them money, it provides an opportunity for them to come together to share their stories, their knowledge, help each other and to network.”

Ro Teimumu said many more skilled women were out there and must be encouraged to join and be part of the expo activities.

She said it was encouraging to see young women present because it was vital that the skills and knowledge displayed were passed on to the younger generations, so they were not lost.

“To ensure that this does not happen, it is important for the Ministry of Education to include art and crafts in their curriculum to offer a safety net for those students who are not academically inclined,” Ro Teimumu said.

“The Opposition and I express our well wishes to the women participants for the next three days. We call on the general public to visit the exhibitions to meet our talented women leaders and check out what is on display.”

Ro Temumu said the expo provided a platform for women to showcase their skills and talents.

She said the Ministry of Women, women’s organisations and sponsors must continue with the programme for the benefit of women in rural and urban areas.
