Ex-Teacher Found Guilty By Suva Magistrates Court

A former school teacher was found guilty and convicted of General Dishonesty Obtaining A Gain in the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.

Between January 1, 2011, and January 31, 2012, in Suva, with the intention of dishonestly obtaining a gain, Litiana Rogoyawa Taoi received $18,496.94 as salary from the Ministry of Education knowing that she was deemed to have resigned from the ministry and that she was not eligible to receive the said salary.

Taoi was a school teacher and stopped working at the beginning of the school’s Term 1 in 2011.

She continued to receive $263 in her account every fortnight until February 2, 2012.

The money was deposited by the Ministry of Education into her account.

The court found that the accused was aware that the money was the salary from when she was still employed.

She continued to withdraw after the monies were deposited and by not querying the bank of her former employers as to the origin of the monies.

The court heard this indicated that she intended to use the money for her own despite being uncertain as to its origin.

It was heard in court that her actions were intentional.

Mitigation will be heard at a later date.
