Mali District School, the only school on Mali Island in the province of Macuata, has been finally equipped with a provision of a fibreglass boat and outboard motor engine from the Ministry of Education.

The head teacher of the school, Inoke Koroduadua, said there were 53 students from Year One to Year Eight, 15 students from kindergarten and five teachers who will use the boat.

“There are two villages on the island, Nakawaga and Vesi, from where our students come by boat to attend school at Ligaulevu Village,” Mr Koroduadua said.

“We had arranged a private boat which used to collect 80 cents coupon each from our students one way.

I have been the head teacher of this school for four years and I have seen how students travel to and from school in the boat.

“We had made requests to our ministry and finally we have own boat which the manager of the school, Taniela Rokoruvuaka, will operate.

“We are very thankful to the Government for their support.

This is a huge investment and timely and very important for us and the community.”

Northern Divisional Education Officer Selemo Drokamaisau said the cost of this project was $20,000.

“Along with Mali District School, Dogotuki Primary School in Macuata Province was also given a boat and engine this year,” Mr Drokamaisau said.

“This initiative is taken by the Ministry of Education under free education scheme to provide transportation aid where Rural Service Licence (RSL) is not available.”
