Timely Accident Compensation Payouts Most Welcome

Two more recipients for compensation under the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF) received $75,000 each yesterday.

It was not just a day filled with emotions, but one that the recipients looked back upon and wondered what they would do with this money in memory of the loved ones they lost.

In the past accident victims and families of those who lost their lives on our roads had to endure a long wait via the courts for either approval or the disappointment of dismissal of their compensation claims.

With ACCF the long wait is now over.

All motor vehicle owners would have to pay a reduced motor vehicle levy from what they used to pay as the compulsory third party levy.

An Opposition MP who attended the payout ceremony praised the new system while alluding to the fact that Fijian victims of road accidents languished for years as they waited for the insurance payouts for their injuries or when losing a loved one on our roads.

Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the presentation of the ACCF as highlighted in the first compensation event was a way to create awareness and awareness is something we all need to do.

Everyone needs to inform their families that compensations are available.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the Government wanted more Fijians to be aware that there was a compensation scheme in place.

He said this was a way for families to get back on their feet, put a smile back on their faces, make a memorial for their loved ones and give thanks for all they have.

It may been seen negatively by those families close to the victims because parents and spouses receive the compensation.

But it’s reality, says the A-G.

ACCF has received six death compensation applications and three have been paid out.

The Accident Compensation Act 2017 was passed in Parliament last year.

How the first three families are feeling about their compensation and how they are making use of it are matters they will have to deal with.

Only God could comfort them and give them peace.

But a quick turnaround time to payout accident compensation claims to ease the suffering of loved ones is a first step in the right direction.
