Thirteen years of memories disappeared into smoke as a morning blaze in Alla Datta, outside Nadi Town yesterday left five people homeless.

The fire destroyed a three- bedroom partially wooden- corrugated iron and concrete house.

House owner Ajay Kumar, 51, and his family left their home that morning to attend a wedding.

It was cut short when they learned of the incident from their neighbour.

“I bought this home in 2005 and since then we have extended over the years,” Mr Kumar said.

“There were plans underway to extend the house when this fire destroyed everything.”

His wife, Reshmi Lata said, “our whole life savings have perished in this fire.

“We did not use the stove in the morning nor did we eat. We normally check our home thoroughly before we depart.

“This morning we left home at 8.45am, but we are not sure of what has happened.”

According to neighbour Aklesh Prasad, who witnessed the incident, he had just finished his breakfast when he noticed  heavy smoke coming from the house.

Without any hesitation, Mr Prasad alerted the Police and the National Fire Authority.

Mr Prasad said, “I heard a big bang. There was heavy smoke and we  could not do anything because all was impossible.”

Police confirmed that the fire had occurred after 9.30am. There were no reports of causalities since the home was vacant.

The National Fire Authority confirmed that two trucks were deployed to the scene to assist in containing the fire. Edited by Percy Kean
