The Fiji Airways Flying Fijians centre Vereniki Goneva was disappointed of copping a yellow card that allowed Tonga to strike back and win 27-19 at Churchill Park, Lautoka yesterday.

With the Flying Fijians leading 19-14 Goneva who attempted to intercept a Tongan pass had knocked the ball forward.

English referee Luke Pearce ruled that it was a deliberate knock-on and sent him to the sin bin.

“If the Flying Fijians were not reduced to 14- men, there could be a different story,” he told SUNsports after the match.

Goneva who has scored the second try said he was sorry for being in the sin bin during the final 10 minutes of the match, which saw the Tongans fightback to win.

“It was a good game but it was not the result we had wanted against Tonga. We had a lot of scoring opportunities but we did not use it well. We’ve learnt a good lesson from this match. This loss will make us re-look at ourselves towards the bigger games we have in the future.”

The Newcastle Falcons star winger said what had happened was something that was beyond his control.

“I cannot do anything about it but we had a game plan. Since that is the call from the referee I cannot change the decision but I do understand the weight this match means to the two nations. I would like to apologise to the nation that we did not win today.

“We will be a better team on another given day but we need the supporters to rally behind the team,” he added.
