My Patriotic Duty, Says Rabuka In Response To A-G statement

SODELPA leader Sitiveni Rabuka says he is ready to clear what he calls the debt trap diplomacy by China.

During a fundraising dinner at Studio 6 in Suva on Friday night he said it would be his “patriotic duty”.

He was responding to statements by the Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, who said the recent claims about the Government’s Chinese debt made by Mr Rabuka on the Australian television show 60 Minutes were “unpatriotic”.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also said the SODELPA leader’s comments were not factual.

During the show, titled ‘The China Syndrome’ Mr Rabuka said that China’s plans in the nation were “domination” and “domination of the region”.

On the TV show, Mr Rabuka said he was not comfortable with China’s involvement in Fiji’s affairs and there was a fear that the Chinese would take over Fiji’s ports and airports because it was happening around the world.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum clarified and raised serious concerns about the former prime minister’s claims.

This is after a number of media groups reached out for comments on the remarks Mr Rabuka made recently on the Chinese debt in the country.

“Yesterday (Thursday), the A-G called a press conference and personally attacked me by misrepresenting my interview on 60 minutes,” Mr Rabuka said.

“He said I was ‘unpatriotic’ for bringing up my concern about the hundreds of millions in debt owed to China.

“I am a true patriot of Fiji.

“I find it my patriotic duty to prevent the mistakes of the past that this Government is diving headlong into debt at a larger and more devastating scale to the tune of half a billion dollars to one lender.
