The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) West president Solomone Kaumaitotoya said they wanted to educate and up-skill Fijians to be independent and self-sufficient.

One of the methods of accomplishing their goal was the organising of the Self Reliance Community Fair held at the LDS church in Balawa, Lautoka, on Saturday.

“The programme in itself is self-reliance and has been part of the church, it talks about being independent, making your own life and starting your own business doing things on your own rather than depending on others,” Mr Kaumaitotoya said.

“The welfare programme is something they emphasised on because it taught people to be self-reliant.

“It is also about assisting others and to contribute, so that is the welfare side of things, to support the needy and the poor and to prepare us for natural disasters.”

Members from all the LDS churches in the Western Division gathered in Lautoka, for what was a day of learning and basically a day to interact, fellowship and spend time with family and friends.

Welfare specialist Olanrewaju Afolayan said the event was the first of its kind to be held in Fiji.

“The main concept behind this programme is to help those who are in need and also help them understand how to pull their current careers up,” Mr Afolayan said.

There were also some other organisational booths like Water Authority of Fiji and Land Transport Authority at the venue of the event.
