Social Democratic Liberal Party leader Sitiveni Rabuka had his bail varied in the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.

Rabuka appeared before Magistrate Jioji Boseiwaqa represented by defence lawyers Filimoni Vosarogo and Lynda Tabuya.

Mr Vosarogo told the court that they had filed Rabuka’s voir dire grounds on Monday June 18, 2018 and had subsequently emailed a portable document format (pdf) of the document to the prosecution.

This was confirmed by the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption lawyer Rashmi Aslam, who said they were in the process of preparing voir dire disclosures.

Mr Aslam said they would be serving the same to the defence by the end of this week or early next week.

Further, Mr Vosarogo requested the court if Rabuka’s bail reporting conditions could be varied to once in every two months instead of once a month.

Rabuka’s initial bail condition required him to report to the Nabua Police Station on the first Saturday of every month.

Magistrate Boseiwaqa varied the condition to reporting on the first Saturday of every two months after Mr Aslam did not advance any objections.

Mr Vosarogo also stated that his client would be traveling around the country quite often.

As a remedy to fronting the court for variation every time Rabuka has to travel, Mr Vosarogo suggested that defence send a notification by way of a letter to the prosecution including the court to alert them in advance of Rabuka’s travel arrangements.

Mr Aslam did not object and the case was adjourned to July 6, 2018 for mention.

Rabuka has to report to the Nabua Police Station as per his new bail conditions on July 7, 2018.

His bail has been extended.
