Suspended sentence for damaging property

A man, who damaged the property of his ex-wife, was handed a suspended sentence by the High Court in Suva yesterday.

And a permanent domestic violence restraining order was imposed against him with non-molestation conditions.

The accused was sentenced to one month imprisonment suspended for two years by Justice Thushara Rajasinghe

The court heard that the accused broke the glass window of the bedroom of his former wife’s house on May 12, 2018 at Vatuwaqa.

He pleaded guilty to the offence on June 21, 2018 and was convicted accordingly.

The accused had one previous conviction recorded against him in 2005.

Justice Rajasinghe said he was entitled for discount for his good character over the period of the last 13 years since 2005.

The accused was warned that the DVRO would be in force until the court or any other competent court varies or suspends the order.

He was given 30 days to appeal the sentence.
