Fiji’s youngest Olympian Sally Yee is offered a scholarship to study in Japan.

The scholarship is valued at FJ$60,000 and it caters for her education, boarding and her table tennis training training programme in Nagasaki. This is part of her preparation to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The scholarship was announced by Table Tennis technical advisor Anthony Ho at the Fiji Olympic House, Suva, yesterday

Yee is the first in Fiji to receive a substantial long term scholarship that includes a full educational component

Ho said the training that she will be undergoing during her stay in Japan will be a build-up to the upcoming Games that she will be participating in.

“The training in Japan will not only assist her preparation for qualification for the 2020 Olympics but also the lead up event in the 2018/ 2019 including the ITTC Oceania Tour- Fiji from September 7-9.

“She will also be allowed to attend important qualifications and major international/regional competitions hopefully from the other funding she will receive.”

Yee said she is excited with what she has received as it will be a big boost to her young sporting career.

“Not everyone gets this kind of opportunity to go and train with experienced players in other countries.

“I’m grateful that I’m in this scholarship. My training in Japan will surely boost my performance.

“I started training when I was 12, it all started from my parents and they have inspired me to continue playing.”

This year Yee won the women’s singles in the Pacific Cup and together with her sister, Grace they caused the biggest upset at the World Junior Circuit in Cook Islands where they defeated players from top Oceania countries.
