Sapna Living A Rugby Dream

Sapna Deo is living out her dream playing the sport she so loves, rugby.
Sapna ( dream in Hindi), has also set her sights on becoming the first Canadian Fijian female player to represent Canada in both 7s and 15s.
The 18-year old Fraser Valley East/West Provincial Rugby team standout says she is working hard to fulfill her dream.
“One needs to follow their dream, work hard to achieve it,” she said.
“I’m determined to represent Canada one day.”
Sapna said she was inspired to take up rugby 10 years ago (2008) by sevens exponent Waisale Serevi, who she idolizes.
“Waisale Serevi is the reason why I’m playing rugby. I met him in Fiji in 2008, got an autograph and he said try out the sport as its fun.
“I’m forever grateful to him for inspiring an 8-year old to take up the sport.
“He’s my inspiration,” Sapna said.
The Yale Secondary School Grade 12, student has won numerous accolades over the last few years and just recently she was named as the British Columbia High School Girls Rugby Provincials’ MVP, and Senior Female Athlete of the Year.
Sapna plays halfback, first five eighth and wing and is a kicker for her team.
“Growing up I had always been influenced by the game, being Fijian, it seemed right to play the national sport and represent out here, in Canada,” she said.
The towering lass said her brother, Akash Deo’s guidance also makes her the player she is today.
“Without his guidance, I would not be where I am today.”
She says her brother spends countless hours with her constantly introducing new moves and tactics.
“He is always pushing me to do better.”
