The inaugural Corrections Skills Competition kicked off at the Naboro Corrections Complex yesterday.

A total of 75 competitors from the 15 Corrections institutions from around the country are taking part.

In launching the competition Commissioner of Corrections Francis Kean said the event intended to bring together and test all the values and virtues of the work done in the various institutions.

“This event should be educational and help build the bonds and essence of team work within your various institutions and it should be something that all of you should enjoy,’’ he said.

Mr Kean said competitions such as this were designed to bring them together to strive for excellence because it would test their mental capacity, determination and ability to work together under stress.

The two-day competition began with a theory session yesterday.

“Day 2 will be the physical aspect of the exercise where each team will undergo an obstacle course around the Naboro Farm complex,” Mr Kean said.

The Corrections Skills Competition is expected to be held again during the Corrections Day celebrations this October.

He said plans were in the pipeline to make this an annual event to culminate in sending a Fiji team to the Asian Corrections Skills Competition in Singapore in 2020.
