Women can help bring about development, improve fishing operation.

The Minister for Fisheries, Semi Koroilavesau, is encouraging the Fishermen Association to include women in their various associations.

Speaking at the association’s meeting at the Southern Cross Hotel in Suva yesterday, he said women were better record keepers, book keepers and good at handling financial transactions.

He said they would also bring about development to the rural and maritime areas and help improve fishing operations.

The meeting was the first initiative for the purpose of getting the representatives of the Fisherman Association as well as getting all the supporting agencies together.

“This is the best way forward. We can work together to raise the level of development and improve the business operational model and enhance the standard of living of the rural and maritime communities through fishing,” Mr Koroilavesau said.

He also said they could work together to build capacity, improve fishing infrastructure and assist through the provision of freezers, storage facilities, marketing initiatives and acquiring the right vessel size to ensure safety at sea.

There were more than 20 representatives who attended the meeting.
