Reluctant at first to join the cadet programme in school, sisters Deborah Esther and Luisa Lailai of Dudley High School, yesterday said that it was the best decision they made.

The girls were part of the school’s historic cadet passing-out parade at Albert Park in Suva yesterday.

Ms Lailai, 18, a final year student who wore the Navy uniform, said it was a privilege for her being senior at school to be part of the cadet.

“I was nervous because everybody expected good results from us but am also excited to parade with my younger sister today,” she said.

Luisa, who is in Year 9, said it was a decision they did not regret.

Their mother, Resina Lailai, said that like other parents, she was a proud mother witnessing her daughters’ parade.

“There were some hiccups about the uniform, but we are here to support our girls,” she said.

“I thank the school motivating the students in the area of discipline.

“In the past my girls would not listen to me for simple instructions, but today they are changed person.

“My girls will never forget their experience as being part of these training,” she said.

Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto congratulated them in achieving their goal.

He told the 786 cadets: “The training is not meant to turn you into Navy sailors or soldiers, but what training does is to help instil in to you some very important virtues such as discipline, perseverance, obedience and respect that are important in school and at home.”

The school roll is 1080.
