Yam Show to Boost Production Up North

A one-day show aimed to boost yam production in Vanua Levu was organised in Savusavu on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Agriculture at Wainigata Research Station in Savusavu saw yam farmers coming together and displaying their produce.
Showcase were the different varieties of yams available.
Provincial Administrator Semi Kuru said: “I would like to remind you that Government is here to assist our farmers and provide the necessary technical and advisory services to make farming a business.
“The show helped in boosting the yam production not only in Cakaudrove but Vanua Levu as a whole.
“It also strengthened the co-ordination between farmers and the Ministry of Agriculture in a more participation approach in yam farming.
“Yam cultivation in Fiji dates back to many decades ago where our forefathers grow yams on a small scale for food security, traditional obligations and disaster mitigation.
“Sharing of traditional knowledge is very important in yam farming as we try and tackle the effects of climate change to food production systems and how yams effectively contributed to food security.”
The theme for the show was ‘Promoting Yam Cultivation for Resilience and Food Security’.
