Nineteen-year-old swimmer, Epeli Rabua says, winning the gold medal in the 50 metres backstroke at the Ocean Swimming Championships in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea was an honour and an amazing experience.

It was after a 14-year lapse that Fiji has won a gold medal at an Oceania event.

The first- year law student at the University of the South Pacific was among the national swimming reps that arrived at Nadi International Airport last night.

“I didn’t know that we hadn’t won a gold medal for the last 14 years until that day,” he said.

The national swimming team won a total of 8 Oceania medals and 10 Island medals.

Swimming assistant coach Paula Cokanasiga said they were proud of our swimmers and hope that the management would host them after they have spent time with their families.
