The Walesi App has been rated by Google Play Store as number one top free App in the region garnering over 10,000 downloads in just three days.

This was highlighted by the Solicitor-General, Sharvada Sharma, while speaking at the 2018-2019 National Budget briefing session for members of Parliament on Tuesday.

The Walesi App was launched by the Attorney-General and Minister for Communications Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum on June 26.

“This is a huge milestone for us,” Mr Sharma said.

He also said that within three days after the launch, there were more than 10,000 subscribers on Google Play Store.

“The number of subscribers continues to grow,” he said.

“It is something that is very much being appreciated by all Fijians with smartphones.”

Google Play Store serves as the official app store for the Android operating system.

On the Walesi Set Top Box, Mr Sharma said they had bought 100,000 boxes and had already distributed more than 85,000 to Fijians around the country.

“We want to purchase an additional 30000 boxes which we will distribute to all Fijians who are eligible under the subsidy programmes,” he said.

“There was an allocation for 2017-2018 National Budget for distribution of Walesi Boxes for free.

“Walesi will be able to deliever data through satellite in rural and maritime communities. This will enable them to be logged into the internet and to be able to connect with friends and families abroad as well as on the mainland.”

Mr Sharma said they had already installed 54 Walesi Boxes in rural and maritime communities.

These include Sabeto Highlands in Nadi, Ra, Tailevu, Keiasi in Nadroga, Taveuni, Savusavu, five villages in Rotuma, Cikobia, Udu Point, eight villages in the Yasawas, seven villages in Moala, and Yacata in Lau.

“We will continue with community installations. There are quite a number of other request forms that have been filled by the villages and we will continue to do that,” he said.
