Alleged Rapists ‘Lure Victims For A Ride’

A 20-year-old rape complainant recalled in court the request that lured her and a friend into a car occupied by four men at around 9pm on October 9, 2016.

“It’s okay my sister, you are our sister. We just go to Korovou to pick something and come back,” she said.

The two girls were standing outside Deoji Store in Nausori Town when they were approached by accused Luke Sorovakatini.

Little did they know that the ill-fated ‘joy ride’ that they were promised would take them to a secluded spot about 30 minutes outside outside Korovou Town where they were allegedly subjected to lewd sexual acts.

While giving her evidence yesterday, the 20-year-old complainant said they agreed to take a cruise with the boys while drinking bourbon in the car.

She said one of the accused Sanjay Lal drove the car, while Wame Baleimakogai sat in the front passenger seat and she sat in the back passenger seat with her friend accompanied by Napolioni Leiloma and Sorovakatini.

The witness said when they got to Korovou town Lal told her to accompany him to pick something from a friend’s house.

When they got off the car Lal asked the girl to have sex with him to which she asked him, “if we have sex will you give me something?”

State lawyer Taitusi Tuenuku questioned the witness as to why she gave that response to Lal to which she said, “because he told me for us to go to a motel in Korovou”.

Mr Tuenuku then asked her why she did not try to get away from Lal after he asked her for sex.

She replied that she did not have any money and did not know that place.

The trial continues before Justice Salesi Temo today.

Baleimakogai is represented by Legal Aid Commission lawyer Lice Manulevu, Leiloma is represented by Lavinia David, Sorovakatini is represented by Litiana Ratidara and Lal is represented by private lawyer Jitendra Reddy.
