Adi Salote Caginidaveta stood proud yesterday when she was named the best light machine gun shooter for the 2018 Basic Recruit Course.

Speaking to the Fiji Sun after the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) passing-out parade at the Force Training Ground (FTG) in Nasinu, the 24-year-old said: “I’m really proud of the award, especially when I’m a female and receiving the top prize that is usually dominated by the male recruits.”

She was among 36 female recruits.

“I knew every recruit was aiming for the top prize and I really worked hard for it,” she said.

“It needed a lot of dedication in the 13 weeks of training. I had to dig deep and believe in myself.”

Her next goal is to earn a selection in the Officer Cadet Training course.

“So far, I thank my parents and family for their support. This is what drove me to persevere during the 13 weeks training,” she said.

“The training was tough, but I never regretted my decision to join the RFMF.”

She is keeping her fingers crossed that she would be selected for a tour of duty overseas soon.

Her advice to other young women: “Do not underestimate yourself.”
