Multiculturalism will be the focus of performances by students of Suva Sangam College when they take part in the Kula Film Festival dance competition for the first time this year.

The students hope the school will make a name for itself through their performances.

School Kula Festival co-ordinator Devika Cook said the students were excited to showcase their talents.

“When we started we wanted to take part in the three categories, but then we didn’t have enough time and proper equipment and therefore we will only participate in the dance and poster competition,” Ms Cook said.

“We had four students who were part of the first round of the poster competition, but only one qualified.”

Ms Cook said the students taking part in the dance competition worked hard and came up with different dance styles.

“We watched videos to help us come up with different ideas and we have students from other Pacific countries.

“We combined dances from Nauru, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Indian, Fijian dances and modern dances,” she said.

“Our dance works around multiculturalism and we hope to participate in the Kula Festival in years to come.”

The school has a roll of 443 students. The Kula Festival is on July 27 to 28.
