Jai Dhir Singh in January this year.

Air Terminal Services (ATS) Employees Trust chair Jai Dhir Singh has been sentenced to three months in jail by the High Court in Lautoka.

Justice Mohamed Ajmeer ordered that Singh pay $9000 to the opposing party.

Singh was charged with contempt of court in regard to a statement that he allegedly made at the ATS strike on January 19, 2018.

It was alleged that he made comments relating to the judiciary and the minister responsible.

Mr Singh was not present at the hearing because he was in Australia. He was represented by lawyer Isoa Tikoca.

The prosecution was represented by the Attorney-General’s Office.

Justice Ajmeer said that he took all factors into consideration

before determining his sentencing, adding that contempt of court was a serious offence and it was a deliberate and an inexcusable act by Singh.

A bench warrant has been issued by Justice Ajmeer for Singh’s arrest.
