The Fijian women’s football team have set their target to win the Oceania championship and qualify to next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.

The side have been training under head coach Marika Rodu as they prepare for the preliminary competition to be staged at Churchill Park in Lautoka on August 24-30.

Rodu told SUNsports yesterday that the competition involves Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and American Samoa.

“This is the first stage and we will work hard to earn a spot to the world cup,” the former Rewa coach said.

Rodu indicated that their opening clash against Vanuatu is going to a big test for them.

“Most of our players are part of the under-20 women’s national team and it is great to see them grow every day.

“Right now I don’t want to rely on one or two players, I want to get them to understand the game and be ready.

“The winners of the qualifier will join hosts New Caledonia and reigning champions New Zealand in the final tournament along with Tahiti, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Samoa, and Cook Islands.”
