Proposed works on the Lakena and Manoca drainage improvement project in Nausori are intended to minimise the impacts of flooding.

This is by safely carrying storm water away from built-up areas into rivers and creeks.

The project was commissioned by the Minister for Waterways Mahendra Reddy yesterday.

It will be completed in the next 30 days.

The Ministry of Waterways and Environment aims to minimise flooding risks to people, property and infrastructure by building and managing drainage infrastructure.

Work includes clearing of existing water channels in the vicinity of the Lakena and Manoca areas.

This is to clear sediment, debris, overgrown weeds and rubbish to allow the passage of water towards the discharge outlets.

The cost of the Lakena and Manoca drainage improvement project is $22,572.

“This programme is in addition to the existing programmes that we are already engaged in,” Mr Reddy said.

“We will work closely with the Fiji Roads Authority, Ministry of Agriculture and the communities to improve the drainage system.

“I’m banking on the community’s support in future.

“We are totally pleased to undertake drainage works in another important residential and small holder farm area in Nausori.

“Residents of Lakena and Manoca experience flooding in their compounds, farms and on the road during heavy rain.

“The drains that will be aligned, reshaped and desilted will direct the surface runoff to the Rewa River and Waimanu River. This will reduce the time for accumulation of surface water.”

The cost of the project at Lakena is $10,800 and for Manoca it is $11,772.
