Ex-NFP Man On Rape Charge Alleges Police Brutality

A former National Federation Party provisional candidate charged with one count of rape yesterday alleged in court that he was brutally assaulted while in Police custody.

The accused, 66, who appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar, made the allegation through his lawyer, Devanesh Sharma.

It is alleged that the man raped his 53-year-old sister-in-law at her home in Nasinu on June 28, 2018.

Mr Sharma told the court that according to his client’s medical report, the accused had sustained fractures to the left side of his body.

The accused was further remanded by the court.

State prosecutor Eoghan Samisoni asked the court for 21 days to file information and disclosures and also a response for the accused’s bail application.

He also told the court that he had received the medical report of the accused and would file it with the disclosures.

Justice Goundar told the state prosecutor to obtain and include the accused’s travel history with the information and disclosures within 21 days.

The judge said he wanted to see the medical and x-ray reports.

The case was adjourned to July 30 for bail hearing.
