Elders Push For Drug Free Village

Nakorovatu, Naitasiri elders have unanimously agreed in that their village should be drug free.

Village chief, the  Taukei Nakorovatu and Vunivalu Waima, Ratu Timoci Rokobukete  said youths who had moved in to settle in the village had brought with them new lifestyles that were totally different to village life.

“This new lifestyle includes the smoking and cultivation of marijuana in the village,” Ratu Timoci said.

“Village youths have been reminded of the village by laws on drugs.

“Those, who smoke and cultivating marijuana will have to leave the village with their family to resettle somewhere else.”

The Naitasiri chief said village elders had people in the village, who were monitoring the situation and would report to the village headman (turaganikoro) of any drug related incident.

“The village elders will deal with the victims first before they are referred to the Police,” he said.

“The Ministry of Agriculture has organised some farming programmes for youths to be involved in. The youths he said were using idle lands for farming and had been supported by their parents.”

Ratu Timoci said the same farming programmes would be introduced to all villages in the Waima district.
