The first phase of construction on the new $4.79 million market in Namaka, Nadi, will be completed next month.

This has been confirmed by the Minister for Local Government, Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Bala, who was visiting the construction site yesterday.

Once the first phase is completed, he said, market vendors in the old market would be relocated into the new market so that rehabilitations would begin in the old one.

The new facility will accommodate 355 market vendor stalls in addition to the existing 221 stalls, including 48 beds in the accommodation centre with basic facilities for women market vendors.

“The work is in progress and we hope to have the first phase of works completed in three weeks. This facility will also include two food outlets with a 38-seat capacity,” Mr Bala said.

He said Government had tried its best to accommodate people in their developments so they would be able to improve their standard of living.

“Projects like this market will ensure that our growth is not just focusing on overseas markets, but also to our own Fijian consumers.

“Once the first phase is completed, our contractors will then start working on the refurbishment of the old market which will be the second phase of works,” Mr Bala said.

Rainwater harvesting, he said, would be introduced in the facility with the capacity to store up to 20,000 litres of water.
