Following the announcement of Government’s 2018-2019 national budget, the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development, Disaster Management, and Meteorological Services is challenging itself to increase its productivity rate for the new financial year.

Speaking at a strategic planning workshop to senior practitioners and policy makers in rural development and disaster management from all around the country yesterday, Permanent Secretary Meleti Bainimarama challenged his team to achieve at least 90 per cent of budget and output implementation by the third quarter of the new financial year.

He told participants that open discussions and solutions-focused thinking were necessary to alleviate the rate of work and to use public funds better.

“The overall push for performance management in the public sector and in this Ministry has highlighted how important business planning is and its link to achievements. We need to improve on our planning and monitoring mechanisms”, Mr Bainimarama said.

“We are expected to develop or identify our key performance indicators that will help us measure the output of our service delivery programmes.

“We must improve in the area of good governance and accountability in the management of our resources. We must improve our level of customer services.”

As an outcome of the workshop, the Ministry is also expected to finalize its organizational Strategic Development Plan for the next three to five years, the Operation Plan for the next financial year, and also the Standard Operating Procedures for the organisation’s programmes and products.

The three-day Strategic Planning Workshop is being held at the Warwick Fiji at the coral coast and being attended by over 50 rural development and disaster management practitioners.
