Minister for Waterways, Mahendra Reddy yesterday requested villagers of Moala, Nadi to rise above their emotions and start thinking about their future generation.

The village is located right beside the Nadi River with a population of 800 people and 80 houses.

Mr Reddy’s request came after it was seen that there was a need to relocate the village to higher ground as it is located in a flood prone area. Villagers over the past years have been requesting Government to fix drainage systems along the road leading to their villages.

“I know that your forefathers, parents and children were here. There is always emotion attached, but I am requesting all of you to rise above your emotions and think of the lives of your future generation, they need to be safe,” he added.

Mr Reddy said they had sighted a piece of land in Tunalia in Nadi to relocate the villagers to only if they agreed to the proposal.

“We have a temporary solution for them to build river bank protection along the river banks beside their village, but what they need to do is look at the situation 40 to 50 years from now.

“But the decision will be up to the villagers because our duty is just to offer them solutions to their problems. Government will help you financially if you decide to move to the new land in Tunalia we’ve already allocated,” he added.

Momo Na Tui Nadi, Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci said the decision to relocate villagers was a good idea.

“I think it is good that the minister has finally come out to see the villages affected by floods in this area,” he added.
