Vunivalu Dispute Letter  Cancelled:  Commission
Ratu Epinisa Cakobau

Chairman of the Native Lands and Fisheries Commission (NLFC) Ratu Sireli Vananalagi Vesikula yesterday confirmed that the letter disputing Ratu Epenisa Cakobau’s installation as Vunivalu of Bau had been cancelled.

He said this was done after his office had received a letter from Iiesa Delasau, the Roku Tui Tailevu, formally advising the Commission about the demise of the complainant, the late Ratu George Kadavulevu Cakobau.

Ratu Vesikula said his office would officially inform Ratu Epenisa on the cancellation.

He said this would open the way for the Vunivalu sub clans –Mataiwelagi, Naisogolaca, Muaidule and Qaranikula to meet and choose their Vunivalu candidate.

The Commission had stopped the planned installation after it had received a letter disputing Ratu Epenisa’s installation from Ratu George Kadavulevu Cakobau, his elder half brother, and also considered the following factors:

  • That a split was evident within the chiefly households of the Tui Kaba clan;
  • Protocol was breached by those selecting the proposed candidate Ratu Epenisa Cakobau;
  • The Turaga Roko Tui Bau had withdrawn from performing his duties in the installation process; and
  • There was a split in the Vanua of Bau and the Kingdom of Bau.

Ratu Sireli then exercised the power vested on him by the iTaukei Lands Act 1905 Section 17 (1) to resolve a dispute as to headship, which had been brought to its attention.

This, he said, had been cancelled because of the death of Ratu George.

He said the door was now open for the selection of the new Vunivalu.

Ratu Sireli cautioned that the selection procedure should be followed.
