The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team were welcomed in style during the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup Sevens at the Embarcadero Plaza in San Francisco yesterday.

Over 6000 rugby fans from all over the world were at the Plaza to cheer on their team.

US Rugby representative Barbara O’Brien said it was showtime.

“There is no other spectacular spot than San Francisco where top sevens rugby teams from all over the world come and play,” she said.

O’Brian reiterated that sevens rugby is the sport of the future.

The Fijians led by captain Seremaia Tuwai were mobbed by the fans while the Fiji Airways Fijiana side came in late during the opening and took the stage later in the ceremony.

The Iliesa Tanivula-coached side went for their final training run and came in late for the welcoming parade.

Top seed South Africa came in dressed in their traditional dress along with their women’s sevens team.

A ground-breaking RWCS 2018 in San Francisco is what World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont is anticipating.

The three-day, 40-team RWCS will be a competition of firsts – the first World Cup in the USA, the first sevens event to feature an exciting knockout format and the first RWCS to be hosted in a Major League Baseball world champion venue.

It is also the first after the landmark Rio 2016 Olympic Games – an event that projected sevens to a record global broadcast audience and attracted 30 million new fans to the sport.

Fan-engagement in the USA was an integral part of the Olympic Games revolution. Broadcaster NBC introduced the sport to new audiences across the nation, which was a major driver behind record fan growth, while sevens’ made for social media format is proving a hit with youth audiences in the USA.

“Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 will be a ground-breaking and spectacular event that will write another exciting chapter in the remarkable sevens success story,” Beaumont said.
