The head boy of Lautoka’s St Thomas High School has expressed concern that technological advancements are now taking over the lives of students in Fiji.

He urged parents and guardians to be aware of the whereabouts of their children and what they get up to.

Ratu Rakuita Qerewaqa made the comments while speaking to the Fiji Sun about the school’s entry in the Kula Film Festival awards.

“Do we even know what children do behind their parents back,” he said.

Ratu Rakuita said that too much time was being spent on online activities that students often forgot about life’s precious moments.

The school is among many participating in the Kula Film Awards and the theme chosen this year is Gadget Epidemics.

Another student and participant Sophia Tafo’ou said technology was taking over the minds of students.

“Most of our young ones are so into their mobile phones instead of doing outdoor activities,” she added.

“Students should be able to balance their family, study time and the time they spend with technological gadgets.”

Maciu Seru, teacher and editor of the movie, said the film helped many students identify their own talents.

He said a blend of pure seriousness with touches of humour were vital to establish the plot of the movie.

“We are trying to raise awareness in the addiction that has been brought up by technology,” Mr Seru said.

He said it was very easy for a student to get a phone and have access to the internet.

“Students really get carried away by this,” Mr Seru said.

Meanwhile, Ratu Rakuita hopes that their film shares that appealing message to all students and parents.
