The oldest runner during the 2018 Island Chill Suva Marathon, Shiri Chand managed to finish the half marathon at Albert Park, Suva yesterday.

Dubbed ‘Mushroom’ the 67-year old former national long distance runner, said though age has caught up with him, he is fortunate to have his wife’s of 20 years, Paulina’s support.

Chand added it is time that young runners step up and take on the challenge.

“I am old still and I am running,” the Batinikama, Labasa native said.

He started running in 1970 and went on to represent the country at the 1979 South Pacific Games in Suva.

“From then I continued to represent Fiji in the long distance events. In 1989, I was awarded the Sportsman of the Year.”

“I would like to advice people who wish to take up the sport to train harder and always believe they can do it.”

Chand has won several medals in the local competitions and his best time in the full marathon is 2 hours 32 minutes.
