Saqani High School will highlight the importance of retaining one’s culture while embracing change at this year’s Kula Film Awards.

The school is working on a film based on cultural identity, which focuses on the roots and heritage of iTaukei traditions.

The film will emphasise the importance of certain values such as co-operation, compassion and how an individual comes into his village and tries to do things his own way.

This changes, when he realises how in a close-knit community, everyone works together, sharing the workload, tears and remorse of the others.

A total of 10 students were cast in the film.

With the theme “Roots”, it is based on cultural identity, focusing on the roots of our Fijian tradition and heritage.

Film co-ordinator and teacher Sonal Prasad said they chose the theme because they saw firsthand how those who were from urban areas did not even know their dialect, cultural ways and were quite lost.

“This causes a lot of confusion because they really do not feel that it is worthwhile to learn their tradition,” he said.

Mr Prasad said with the isolation in the location of the school they faced a lot of challenges.

“We are not equipped with a lot of resources that other schools have, but we have a lot of talented students who show a lot of dedication in the film making,” he said.

“We have showcased the beautiful surrounding and the musical talents of the students of Saqani and we know that these natural talents will go a long way.”

Saqani High School hopes that the small film will change the lives of people.
