Preparations by the Fijian Elections Office for this year’s general election have been boosted by the Indian High Commission in Suva.

This is after Indian High Commissioner Vishvas Sapkal handed over four new vehicles to Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem.

This is to help with the FEO’s transport needs for the election.

Mr Saneem acknowledged the Indian Government for their kind assistance.

“ … on the day we received this assistance in a form of a cheque for the sum of $224,000.00, I mentioned that the election is the largest logistics exercise in peace time for any country and Fiji is no different,” he said.

“The unique features of election involves a lot of transportation requirement to various areas through roads that require tough terrain vehicles, as well as vehicles that can sustain off road requirements.

“The Mahindra vehicles that we have purchased from the assistance are actually designed for these roads.”

He said the choices of these vehicles are from their experiences in 2014.

Mr Saneem added that the Mahindra Scorpio that the FEO acquired from the assistance was a six speed turbo-charged vehicle that was very strong and had enough power to deliver materials to interior locations.

So far, FEO has received 14 vehicles from the Indian Government as well as luxury vehicles for the Electoral Commission’s transportation requirements

“We’d like to acknowledge the tremendous support as well as the friendship that the FEO shares with the High Commission of India in Fiji and credit goes to His Excellency Mr Sapkal for his steadfast approach,” Mr Saneem said.

“His Excellency has been a great friend to the FEO and has stepped forward to provide us the assistance and guidance that we may need at any point in time.”

He added that they had decided to personalise the number plates of the vehicles to something more prominent and more appealing.

The vehicles are numbered VOTE, I VOTE, MY VOTE and WE VOTE and will be distributed to the four divisions.

“So I am sure that the members of the public will remember, the election is coming,” Saneem said.
