Minister for Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy on Friday awarded 30 Ministry of Waterways Officers their Boat Master Licence (BML) Certificate of participation at Luvuluvu in Nausori.

The recipients were part of a one-week Boat Master Licence course provided by trainers from the Marine Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF).

The recipients consisted of nine officers from the Central Division, 10 officers from the Western Division and 11 officers from the Ministry of Waterways Office in the Northern Division.

“During a river survey you will be required to go by boat, we cannot continue to hire people to take you,” Mr Reddy said.

“There will a lot of work that you will be tasked to do in the maritime areas and in our waterways.

“These officers will be working in rivers and seas around the country what they have learnt from this BML course which will build capacity in their work in carrying out river surveys and the scoping of our waterways around the country.

“There are close to 400 rivers that needed to be dredged in Fiji.”
