Ex-PWD Workers Await Fate, Hearing Date

Two former Public Works Department employees will be sentenced on conspiracy to defraud and abuse of office charges by the Suva Magistrates Court on October 26.

Three others will have their hearing dates fixed on the same day.

Laisa Halafi and Amelia Vunisea will be sentenced while Jaswant Kumar, Asenaca Kanaivalu, Vaciseva Lagai and Ana Laqere will have their hearing date fixed.

The former PWD employees appeared before Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekera yesterday and prosecution and defence lawyers told the court they had filed mitigation and sentencing submissions.

The charges involve sums of money ranging from $5760.82 to $10,268.74.

The offences are alleged to have occurred between August 1 and December 31, 2009, and between between July 1 and July 31, 2010.
