The children of former national football players who have passed on were presented with $500 each by the Fiji Football Association at Churchill Park, Lautoka yesterday.

Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel said remembering the hard work of former football players was very important.

“We always say that we have forgotten the players of Fiji and we don’t remember them,” he said.

“Our administration has decided that this will never happen.”

Patel said that revenue generated through the veteran’s tournament would be given back to the people.

“Whenever the veteran’s tournament will be held, we will give it back for the children’s education.

“Every year we will be presenting four families with a cheque of $500 each.

“This goes towards the welfare of the children’s school needs.”

Patel said the decision on which families to be awarded is made by the Veteran’s Trustee Committee.

“They are the ones deciding on the families who are in need of the assistance.”

Patel said that they would consider increasing the assistance in the future should the veteran’s tournament be able to generate more revenue in the coming years.

“This is all for a good cause and we are honouring our players who have given their hearts out for their district and country.”

Pita Jaden Dau Jnr, 12, of Lautoka was one of the recipients of the assistance.

“I’m really happy,” he said.

Pita’s dad Pita Dau Snr was a former national and Lautoka football captain who passed away early this year.

Pita Jnr said that he would use the funds to purchase his school stationeries.

“It’s a great honour that my dad had served Fiji and Lautoka and I’m really proud to be receiving this assistance.

“Since I lost my dad, the only breadwinner of the family, I very much appreciate what Fiji Football Association has done for me.”
