Four Fijian Navy women sailors have been chosen by the selection board for overseas officer’s course.

This was confirmed to the Fiji Sun by Fijian Navy chief Captain (Navy) Humphrey Tawake.

“The selection has been made and four women sailors will leave soon for officer’s courses overseas,” he said.

He said they were waiting for offers from naval colleges.

As for the deployment of women sailors, Captain (Navy) Tawake said for the time being the navy would keep them working on land.

“We’re not going to rush them to be part of the crew of our vessels,” he said.

Captain (Navy) Tawake said new vessels that would be arriving had allocated spaces for women sailors.

Meanwhile, 20 Fijian Navy sailors on board the RFNS Kikau are preparing for the Australian Navy’s biggest exercise, known as “Exercise Kakadu”.

Captain (Navy) Tawake said RFNS Kikau was currently conducting boarding operations training in Cairns, Australia, as part of preparations for Exercise Kakadu.

The RFNS Kikau, which recently had a refit in Australia, would be back in Fiji in October.

Another vessel, RFNS Kacau, donated by the People’s Republic of China, arrives in Fiji later in the year.
