Fijians need to place more emphasis on retaining knowledge of their cultures and traditions.

This was highlighted by Adi Meretui Ratunabuabua, a general election provisional candidate for the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), while speaking to the Fiji Sun yesterday.

For this year’s general election, Adi Meretui said she would be emphasising the transmission of knowledge from elders to youths.

There were people who were not fully aware of their language and culture and she wanted to change that, she said.

Adi Meretui said she would highlight the importance of local arts and music.

“Our artists and local musicians need a bigger and better platform for themselves,” she said.

Also, on gender equality, she said; “Our society needs more women recognition.”

Adi Meretui, 56, is a retired civil servant. She is married with six children and six grandchildren.

She lives in Vunamoli mountains in Nadi.

Adi Meretui worked in the department of Heritage and Arts under Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts, Director of Museum and Arts and taught at the Fiji National University’s School of Arts.
