Oral Pathology specialist Dr Osea Gavidi Dukuno will lecture on the topic: Ameloblastoma- What can I do?,

during the Fiji Dental Association conference today

The local expert, at the Fiji National University, will be one of many guest speakers during the conference at the Hilton Resort in Nadi.

His abstract on the lecture reads: “Ameloblastoma is a common benign odontogenic tumor that is slow growing but locally aggressive.

“It is asymptomatic and individuals usually present when the growth is significantly obvious or when there is pain.

“Eighty per cent of these lesions occur in the mandible and it may also affect the maxilla.”

In Fiji’s situation there is an increased occurrence of this condition. It is alarming and usually involves complex surgical procedures.

Oral health professionals should be aware of this occurrence and be able to provide treatment or refer patients to specialists for appropriate management.

His learning objectives

include:

  •  highlight the emerging occurrence of this odontogenic tumor in Fiji.
  •  describe the options for managing this pathology in general practice

 

His Curriculum Vitae includes:

  •  Currently Head of School for Dentistry and Oral Health, College of Medicine Nursing and Health Sciences, FNU.
  •  Oral pathology and oral medicine and also is actively involved in diagnostic oral pathology practice at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva.
  • Joined the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and was appointed head in 2017.
  •  Graduated from the University of Otago having completed the degree of Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Oral Pathology in 2013.
